Time To Run

Every muscle in your body is wound up like a spring ready to explode. Your foot begins to feel the pressure of the starting block as you deepen your cheetah-like stance. With your head facing downward, the granular details of the track come into focus but your attention quickly shifts in anticipation of the starting gun. That loud popping sound you’ve grown so accustomed to as a track star is all that matters now. Upon hearing its arrival you burst out the blocks sprinting towards your destiny.

I can only imagine the thrill of representing our country in the Olympics, especially in track. It’s my favorite Olympic sport and like all the other events, years of preparation come down to one moment. In track those years go back farther than we think. You literally have to crawl before you walk and walk before you run. Ironically, the same thing holds true for being a Christian. We begin as babes in Christ but God expects us to mature and become champions for Him. Sadly, so many Christians were baptized years ago but still walk with the spiritual knowledge of an infant.

“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God…”‭‭ (Heb ‭5‬:‭12‬). In this passage Paul is imploring us to grow in our understanding in all of God’s word. We should become knowledgeable enough to teach less seasoned Christians as well as share and defend the gospel to secular people (1 Peter 3:15). Can you prove Jesus rose from the dead or answer why does God allow suffering? Can you explain the Trinity or God calling for the Israelites to commit genocide against other nations?

Our inability to answer tough challenges  to our faith is a primary reason why so many young adults stop being a Christian once they go off to college or enter the workforce. No wonder 32% of young adults (ages 18-29) are agnostic or atheist. Another problem of being an immature Christian is that it inhibits us from spreading the gospel, especially to those from other religions. Be honest, can you show someone why Jesus is the better choice to place their faith in rather than Muhammad?

The competition for the hearts and minds of our young adults is too important for us to be content with being babes in Christ, hardly able to walk.  We have to become mature Christians– ready to teach others and defend the faith. We have to be ready to run.

Think about it.
