Tick Tock. Tick Tock

“Another one,” I said to myself while staring at my newest gray hair. “Now I’m matching on all levels,” I sighed as I realized my eyebrows were starting to join the party. The only thing keeping me from looking like a box of Uncle Ben’s Rice was the hair dye sitting on the counter. That was 25 years ago and Father Time loves to remind me his steady march continues. Nowadays it takes a good 5 minute stretch just to work my kinks out and thoughts of beating my grandsons in sports are quickly fading. If you’re like me, you wish you could keep the looks and vitality of youth but I’ve come to realize the aging of our bodies is a daily alarm for us to get right.

We all know people who live the same sinful lifestyle they did when you first met them. Hugh Hefner was 91 years old when he died. Supposedly, he lived exactly how he did when he was in his twenties until the very end. To see someone reject the gift of enteral life because they’re too caught up in this one is disheartening. How can someone continue to reject God even as they grow older? Simply put, their heart is hardened. “They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart” (Eph 4‬:‭18‬). Please don’t let the dreadfulness of this verse escape you.

When your heart is hardened you can’t be saved. Why? Because you’re unable to truly understand the desperate need for Jesus to save you. Someone would have more success teaching a 5th grade student calculus than a closed hearted person the gospel. “The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction…” (‭‭1 Cor‬ ‭1‬:‭18‬ ‭NLT‬). Wow! Wow! The most vital aspect of one’s very own existence is utter lunacy to them. When someone sleeps with one person after another it’s because monogamy is foolishness to them. When someone see’s vengeance as the right response it’s because forgiving their enemies is foolishness to them.

Jesus dying for our sins is taught but not comprehended. Jesus being God in flesh is heard but not grasped. Jesus’ promised return is proclaimed but not processed. The closed hearted are like zombies. Walking among us but already dead. People know putting money or anything before God is a sin. People know cursing, drunkenness and lewdness are sins but continue to do these things anyway. Someone who knows better and refuses to change, should be in fear of their heart hardening and hopefully it hasn’t already.

If I’ve described you or someone you know, don’t give up on them our yourself. My prayer, indeed all Christians pray for God’s continued patience with us all. God answers the prayers of His children and all things are possible with Him. You have a choice but the clock is ticking. Our bodies tell us everyday our time is winding down. Heed the alarm!

Think about it.
