Purpose

Wake up; go to work; go back home; go to bed. Wake up; go to work; go back home; go to bed. Wake up; go to work; go back home; go to bed. It sounds so mundane doesn’t it?  Life is surely more than just our jobs so why do we put so much stock in what we do for a living? If we have a good job that pays well, we think we’ve found our purpose our calling. If we don’t like our jobs, then we look at things quite differently. We start to question when, if ever, we will find our purpose. This way of viewing ourselves is– to put it mildly– flat out wrong.

Your career, no matter how important or insignificant you think it is, doesn’t matter. Whether you’re an engineer or a waiter none of it matters. How can I say such a thing when we’ve been taught from day one to get a good education so we can get a good job? Because all of us have bought into the world’s way of conflating our profession with our purpose. We’ve missed the true reason why we’re here so let me give you a reminder…

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matt 22:37).  If there’s one verse in the Bible you should memorize, this is the one. It lays out why you’ve been put on this earth which is to love and honor God. That’s the entire story. That’s your purpose. It all sounds great but how do I go about showing God love and honor? I’m glad you asked. Your love for God is shown by loving other people (I John 4:21). I’m not talking about how you feel towards someone as we all know feelings come and go. You show love by your actions (agape love). How you treat, help, encourage, support, and provide for people demonstrates your love for God.

Knowing your purpose should change how you view life and how you see yourself. We shouldn’t think too highly or lowly of ourselves because we aren’t defined by what we do for a living but how we live. If you’re set on your career path, then good for you, but when you’re at work are you letting your light shine by your words and actions? Even if you’re not happy with your job, work hard so God gets the glory.

Regardless of your profession, you should build relationships, truly care about the well being of your coworkers and take advantage of the platform God has given you to draw people to Him. Not even retirement or unemployment changes your life’s purpose. Your job is and will always be to love and honor God which is shown by loving people.

Think about it.
