Where Did Sin Come From?

Have you ever asked yourself where does sin come from? If you haven't, you should because the answer impacts every aspect of your life, especially the end of it. The origin of sin really is a head scratcher. How can sin exist if God, who cannot sin (James 1:13), created a perfect world free of sin? The answer most people think of is the story of Adam and Eve. Although the Devil enticed Eve to sin, the origin of sin goes back even farther. Don’t get me wrong, Lucifer is the first to sin and he’s currently doing his best to keep us separated from God but he isn’t the author of sin. The answer is something we exercise everyday– free will.

God gave both the angels and humans free will. Why? Because God is the embodiment of love and you can’t have love without choice. Imagine if your boy/girlfriend admitted they were being paid to date you. Any thoughts of that person genuinely loving you would instantly fade. Choice is essential for love. Guys don’t demand, they ask for a lady’s hand in marriage. Unfortunately, the Devil  exercised his free will and chose to rebel against God and he was thrown out of heaven (Luke 10:18). Afterwards is when the Garden of Eden story comes into play. Adam and Eve brought sin into the world because God gave them the free will to either follow or disobey His commands and we all know how that turned out.

Free will is dangerous when we bypass God to fulfill our desires (James 4:2,3). People choose to steal because they want something now instead of waiting on God to provide. People choose to fornicate because they want to fulfill their desire for sex without waiting on God to send them a spouse. People choose to retaliate when wronged rather than wait on God but vengeance belongs to the Lord (Rom 12:19). Our desires entice us to sin but make no mistake about it, it's our free will that enables us to act on it.

Now how does free will impact you once your life comes to an end? Our free will leaves us without any excuses when we stand before God on judgement day. You can’t control how people treat you but you do control how you respond. Troubling situations will arise in your life but you have the choice on whether or not to lean on God to get you through. Even the people living before Jesus are without excuse for God has written the law in our hearts and your conscience lets you know when you do wrong (Rom 2:14-16). Atheist certainly have no excuses for they choose to suppress the knowledge that God exists (Rom 1:18-21). As I said earlier, God is love and he doesn’t force us to follow Him. Just know that you choose. I repeat, you choose to go to hell if you decide to separate yourself from God in this life…for God will honor that choice in the next.

Think about it.
