Truth Quest?

The phone’s alarm attacks your ears as it blares across the bedroom. You instinctively hit snooze to get that oh-so-good few extra minutes of sleep. Inevitably, the alarm wins and you awake to face another day. As your eyes regain their focus you notice an ominous shadow on the wall. “Do not be afraid,” says the tall stranger standing at the foot of your bed. “I’ve come to offer you a choice. I hold two pills in my hand. Take the green pill and you go on believing whatever you want to believe. Take the red pill and the truth about this world will be revealed.” Just as he begins to stretch out his hand you realize you’re in the presence of an angel! Now which pill would you choose?

Given that you’re conversing with an angel the obvious choice is the red pill so why do so many people choose the green one? By now you may be wondering what is this red pill. The red pill symbolizes the Bible but sadly, a lot of people decide not to read it. They rather believe whatever allows them to do what they want. “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,” (2 Tim 4‬:‭3‬). Indeed that time has arrived. Hence the rise of mega churches that teach how to succeed in life rather than how to live righteously.

We think we want the truth but many of us only want our truth so we gravitate towards churches that make us feel comfortable. If you want to live an LGBTQ+ lifestyle, there’s a church for that. If you want to focus on wealth, there’s a church for that too. If church isn’t your thing, then just be spiritual. Even our traditional churches have fallen into giving us what we want instead of what the Bible actually teaches. Worship services often devolve into concerts with all the musical instruments and dance teams (not scriptural). But that’s just a small part of what we miss by not studying the Bible. You know cursing is a sin but so is using crude language (Eph 4:29). Insulting someone or calling them a fool (Matt 5:22) is also contrary to God’s will.

Reading the Bible enables you to see gambling is not a part of being a good steward. It points out the sin of self-righteous and how hypocritical we can be calling out someone’s faults and ignoring our own ‭‭(Matt 7‬:‭3-5‬ ‭). The Bible lets you know lying isn’t okay no matter how you justify it; that sleeping around or shacking up is an abomination to God. It upends the world’s view on divorce as it states divorce for any reason other than adultery is a sin (Matt 19:7-9).

God’s word also paints a picture of His forgiveness and calls us to let go of grudges (Eph 4:31,32). The scriptures force us to look at ourselves and forsake our own passions and desires that only lead to death (Prov 12:28) and embrace righteousness which leads to eternal life (Rom 5:21). The Bible is the absolute truth which is why so many people choose the green pill instead.

Think about it.
