Peace of Mind
It’s been one of the best workdays you’ve had in a long time. You made every green light on your way to work. As soon as you walked in your boss gave you a big promotion that came with a big corner office and an even bigger salary. Things were going so good that the driver in front of you paid-it-forward in the Chic-fil-a line. Just as your day couldn’t get any better you get a call from the radio station announcing you as the winner of a new car! Of course your boss told you to take the rest of the week off so you rushed home to share all of your good news. “Surprise!” your friends and family shouted the moment you opened the door. Passing a table full of presents you hug all of your guest who are hanging on your every word. The warm glow of birthday candles caress your face as everyone sings happy birthday.
Whoa! Let me stop before I get too caught up. We all know workdays like that are few and far between if ever. Many of us go to jobs that aren’t as satisfying as we’d like, deal with people who aren’t as nice as we’d like and bring home a paycheck that doesn’t have as many zero’s as we’d like. Forget the 9 to 5 for a minute… there’s also the kids, spouse, cooking, cleaning, errands, and on and on. Homelife can be as taxing as that know-it-all at work. So how do you find peace in the midst of your daily grind? It may seem like a simple question but how you relieve stress is a litmus test in your relationship with God.
If prayer is not the first thing that comes to mind, then you may need to reevaluate if God is in every aspect of your life. Jesus said “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid,” (John 14:27). Notice Jesus stated his peace is not like the world’s idea of peace. When problems arise we rely on our family or friends for solace. Unfortunately, you can’t always depend on them because they may not be available or they have their own issues to deal with. Far too often people turn to alcohol/drugs or sex only to find they created more problems like addiction or broken relationships.
That’s the world’s version of peace which can be unreliable and is certainly temporal. When the love of God is in you, you’ll rely on Him for everything because everything works for the good of those who love Him (Rom 8:28). You can’t leave God out of your marriage; He created your union. You can’t leave Him out of your job; He gave you that job. You can’t leave Him out of any physical/mental health issues; he created you. When you’re struggling or just need to regain your bearings find a quiet place to pray. It doesn’t matter if it’s at your cubicle, car, or a bathroom stall just exhale and talk to Him. Don’t use lofty speeches; speak plainly as if you’re talking to your best friend “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus,” (Phil 4:7).
Think about it.
