Connect To Love

Do you remember your first crush and I’m not talking about a celebrity crush? I mean the first time you saw your boo on the playground or the bus stop and he/she just made your heart stop. For those whom it may be a little too long ago to recall. How about your first high school crush? Your first real boy/girlfriend that you just knew y’all would be together forever. They were your everything until the next thing came along and stole your heart. Perhaps you were the one at the wrong end of a breakup and ended up heartbroken. Either way, we all go through the ups and downs of relationships in pursuit of the love of our life.

Being that it’s Valentine’s Day your resident love expert (that’s me😁) would like to drop a little love knowledge on you. To all my single friends, before you find your true love  you have to connect to love. The same goes for all of our married couples but that advice applies for how to maintain and grow your love. What do I mean by “connect to love?” It may sound like the title of the latest pop song or some grandiose idea but it’s actually your mission as a Christian. You see God is love and you can’t find, keep, or grow love with anyone if you don’t start by loving Him (1 John 4:16). When you draw closer to God the Holy Spirit grows within you. Your spiritual understanding will skyrocket and these famous Bible verses will take on a whole new meaning:

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.” (‭‭1 Cor 13‬:‭4‬-‭6). God’s love is why He continues to show patience and kindness towards us despite our stumbles. For my singles, this means to be patient with God as you wait on Him to send the right person and be kind (show love) to yourself. You can’t expect someone to be good to you if you’re not good to yourself. Married couples, this calls for you to be patient and kind to your spouse and when that patience runs thin call on the Holy Spirit to strengthen your patience again.

Let me back up for a moment. I hope we all understand Christians should be looking for other Christians and if you’re not a Christian you definitely should be looking for a Christian because everything revolves around understanding and embracing God’s love. Now where was I? Oh yeah, the next part is “Love does not envy… it is not arrogant or rude.” One of the biggest turnoffs to people is arrogance. Singles advice: a confident but humble person is more likely to attract that same kind of person. Plenty of marriages have ended because “I’ve outgrown” my spouse. What that really means is they’ve forgotten we’re all equal in God’s eyes. If you don’t get how rudeness kills any hope of or ruins a relationship, then you may be that arrogant person.

My last nugget of advice is in regard to “wrongdoing and truth.” God is righteous and calls on us to live righteously (1Peter 2:24). Living a Christian lifestyle is very attractive and if a person isn’t drawn to your walk with God, walk away from them. Living righteously keeps us out of tempting situations and places and allows your spouse trust you to the max. I know this advice seems obvious but it’s hard to follow if you’re not connected to Love so open those Bibles, connect to God and watch what Love can do.

Think about it.

Note to singles: sometimes the best person God has for you is you. Marriage doesn’t define anyone. Your relationship with God does.
